COUNSELOR AND COACH

 CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS

 AND TEENS

Natalie Myers, LMHC

Daughter, Friend, Academic Coach & Counselor to Children, Adolescents, and Teens!

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. I hold a master’s degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling and an academic coach with half a decade of experience.

I began wanting to be a forensic scientist

I began my studies at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL and received my bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science. I worked for 4 years in the office of admission as a tour guide while studying for my degree. This is where my passion for working with young people first began.

Throughout my college years I wanted to help others more and more. I became highly involved on campus as a peer mentor and was presented with the opportunity to become a peer counselor. In this role I began to highly value mental health. And wanted to combine my love for forensics and mental health by pursuing forensic psychology. However, I quickly realized that I loved helping people towards their journey of healing more than applying psychology to forensics and the justice system.

Graduation crisis at age 22...

I reached a cross-roads. I knew I was more passionate about counseling than forensics and that I would have to choose. I decided to go with my heart by pursuing my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and help those towards their journey of healing.

During my time as a master's student, I began working at a Domestic Violence Agency. My job as a therapist was to see clients for individual counseling, family counseling, and lead groups which included art therapy for kids. The majority of my clients were children ages 2-17 who experienced severe trauma, abuse, and/or emotional disturbances. I saw how mental health begins to impact us as children and the implications that may have as we grow but was also able to see children and teens complete treatment, learn to regulate, explore boundaries, manage difficult emotions using coping skills, improve communication skills, and explore trauma and healing.

Additionally, during my studies, I also worked as graduate assistant and an academic coach at Lynn University. My job as an academic coach was to work with young adults who are facing academic challenges, obstacles, or possibly probation. During my time as an academic coach, I realized the importance of understanding executive functioning skills. However, these skills aren’t just for academic success but are also needed for everyday tasks. I vowed to continue my work as a therapist and coach to nurture mental health and resilience in children, adolescents, and teens. I hope that by working individually with clients, I can help them self-manage the obstacles and care for their mental health.

My approach to helping children, adolescents, and teens

My approach to both counseling and coaching is Adlerian. The Adlerian approach allows children and teens to engage in a therapeutic process that values them as creative, resourceful, and whole; while using non-directive skills and techniques to engage & empower clients to change their cognitive, affective, behavioral, and relationship pattern.

However, what I value most in my approach is the therapeutic or coaching relationship. I pride myself in learning my client’s likes and dislikes to make the therapeutic relationship more engaging and meaningful.

I am also trained in the following modalities: Play therapy, Trauma- Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Solution Focused, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).
